New build of a two storey Auditorium and teaching facility
SUMMARY / DESCRIPTION:
This D&B project involved the new build of a two storey Auditorium and teaching facility for Herne Hill School. The multi-function Space provides dining, performances, gym classes, catering facilities, ancillary space, WC, shower facilities and a large nursery classroom on the ground floor. Externally, a covered play area was created with a purpose made steel and glass canopy over.
The basement level hall was constructed using contiguous bored piles to form the retaining walls with large ventilation ducting from the roof to the basement space, allowing for natural air flow. The ground floor building envelope was formed with a lightweight, steel, frame structure with traditional brick and block construction to ensure the new hall matched the look of the existing school. External mosaic panels replicate the design of the existing Old Vicarage building adjacent to the new extension.
During the pre-construction phase we liaised with the residents association and Southwark Council to implement an agreed regime for deliveries to and from site, including how traffic movement around the site and noise control was managed
Careful planning of the construction phase and communication with Herne Hill School ensured the School remained fully operational throughout the project with minimum disruption to the school and the local residents. All works were undertaken with the utmost consideration to ensure the safety of the children, staff and anyone associated with the works.
