Partial demolition of the Victorian school building and construction of a new two storey extension to provide additional teaching space.
SUMMARY / DESCRIPTION:
We were delighted to be invited by Highgate School to negotiate our first project with them. The project involved the demolition of the rear external wall of the Victorian school building, and construction of a new two storey extension to provide additional teaching space, together with extensive refurbishment works throughout the interior of the school.
The extension comprised steel frame and traditional masonry construction to form four new classrooms. The remainder of the building was fully refurbished in multiple phases, which included tanking of the existing basement and upgrading of all the internal spaces. A beautiful Victorian-style veranda was constructed on the rear of the property, with the addition of 5,000m2 of landscaping and play areas for the children.
The main challenge for this project was keeping the school fully operational whilst major construction works were taking place. We were able to do this by working collaboratively with the school’s staff and professional team, and as a result of agreeing some re sequencing we achieved a 20-week saving in the overall programme.
This project was a real success story for all concerned and is testimony of how working together as a team can find the best way to deliver complicated projects for all concerned.
